The former Scania-MAN plant in St. Petersburg, which changed its name to BAZ named after Romanov, showed a new Russian truck.
The abbreviation BAZ stands for Bryansk Automobile Plant. The enterprise is part of the defense concern Obukhov Plant, which in turn is part of the even larger conglomerate Almaz-Antey. And the authentic BAZ (which is in Bryansk) is also part of the defense Almaz-Antey. It would be logical to organize the production of the new BAZ truck at BAZ, right? But the management of Romanov counters: we are related only by the trademark, and the project itself was born several years ago within the framework of Obukhov Plant and we never counted on Bryansk. There are enough problems there without us and a workload of defense orders. This is an old, inert enterprise, with an unfortunate location, launching a new project there would be more expensive than building anew. And then the Scania-MAN site became free (the Germans rented it), it turned out very well.
And yes, they consider the naming successful. And the BAZ brand, which has nothing to do with BAZ. And JSC Romanov, which has nothing to do with Ippolit Romanov, after whom the plant was named.
Now the BAZ-Romanov plant is just getting ready to launch. The immediate goal is to assemble five trucks for certification, it is their cabins and chassis that you see in the photographs. There is essentially only one running model, and it is still in a state of “highly artistic mess”. But there is another prototype, which was even tested a little. It was created very quickly: it took only 15 months to develop and build the first vehicle.
