Tesla to show model 2 prototype simultaneously with Cybercom

After years of promises from CEO Elon Musk, Tesla has finally unveiled the Cybercab, Musk’s long-awaited robotaxi that he’s been talking about for at least the last five years. The model was unveiled on the Warner Bros. lot.

Musk told the assembled analysts, auto executives, and investors that Tesla has 20 Cybercab prototypes that are ready to be tested right now. The robotaxi has no steering wheel or pedals and closely resembles the 2022 concept art featured in Walter Isaacson’s recent biography of Musk.

Tesla expects the Cybercab to eventually be available for sale for under $30,000. The company has reportedly delayed (or scrapped) its plans for a $25,000 Model 2 electric car to focus on the robotaxi. Incidentally, some analysts expected Tesla to show off a Model 2 prototype at the same time as the Cybercab, but that didn’t happen. Musk said the Cybercab would go into production “probably” in 2026 or “before 2027,” which didn’t excite investors who are skeptical of the CEO’s often late promises. For example, the updated Roadster concept was unveiled in 2017 and was expected to go into production in 2025, but the project’s status is unclear.
